Episode One: Fall is Here!
This podcast is a bit of a test run for us, and we’re excited to see how this project unfolds! We are based in Accident, MD, in the Northern end of Garrett County and we are so happy you’re joining us for our very first episode! We are interested in sharing stories and events from Mountain Maryland and the surrounding region, so if you have a story to pitch to us you can visit our Contact Us link and send us a note.
Fall in Garrett County is such a beautiful time of year. The color on the mountains is so vibrant, we have to be sure to enjoy every moment before we transition to shovels and ski boots. As the temperature starts to drop the air is filled with smells of wood stoves and fallen leaves.
For this episode we wanted to focus on this Autumn Season, and share a few exciting events happening in the area. I had the opportunity to chat with Jeff Simcoe from the Big Bear Lake Trail Center in West Virginia, as well as Nicole Christian, the President and CEO of the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce. I also had a special guest that helped me ring in this Autumn season with one of my favorite activities - running and jumping in piles of leaves...
Fall for me is exciting and rejuvenating and I don’t know if this happens for others but the chill in the air makes me feel brave and want to try something new. Earlier Last year I found myself trying something I had never imagined I could do, Mountain Biking. My friend Annie took me out to the Big Bear Lake Trail Center in West Virginia and we had a blast. I was with a small group of encouraging women, and even if we felt intimidated by a technical part of the trail, we tried it anyway.
Big Bear has an event coming up October 15th and 16th called the Big Bear Fall Funduro, presented by Dirt Rag magazine. If Mountain Biking is something you have ever thought of getting into, or if you’re a seasoned rider, this family friendly event is definitely worth checking out. I had a chance to chat with Jeff Simcoe, the recreation land manager at the Big Bear Lake Trail Center in Bruceton Mills, WV, to learn a little more about this event.
The Big Bear Lake Trail Center is a 5,000 acre private facility, with 50 miles of Mtn biking trails. They host events from mountain bike races to skills clinics, and this is the first year for the Funduro Festival. The Big Bear Fall Funduro will also host Kids activities on Saturday and a Womens group ride on Sunday.

When I was growing up in Montgomery County Maryland, my family used to have a cabin here in McHenry near Deep Creek Lake, and after summer had ended and we were back in school, we always looked forward to heading West later in the fall to enjoy apple picking and the Autumn Glory festival.
The festival is a wonderful celebration of the season, and is a Combination of music and art and food and community. The festival starts in a few short days and I had the pleasure of sitting down with Nicole Christian, the President and CEo of the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce to highlight some of the upcoming events.
You can find more information about the 49th Annual autumn glory festival at visitdeepcreek.com, or in brochures provided around Garrett County at local businesses, as well as the visitor center at 15 visitors center drive.
