Sideling Hill, located 6 miles west of Hancock in Washington County, is one of the "best rock exposures in Maryland", according to the Maryland Geological Survey website.
My family and I fondly referred to it as "The Cut", and it was the unofficial halfway point on our trip from Gaithersburg in Montgomery County, to our cabin near Deep Creek Lake.
Located on route 68, it's a great spot to step out, take a short scenic tour, use the restrooms, grab a snack, etc. Its also a great spot for an outdoor classroom with awesome views of various sedimentary rock types, structural features, and geomorphic relationships. If you want to really geek out on the geological history, you should definitely visit the Geology of Sidiling Hill Road Cut page.
Driving through the cut we always knew we were getting close to that fresh Garrett County air. There are plenty of campground sites nearby if you want to explore Washington County a little deeper.
